An Animation Voice Acting Workshop For Actors

This is an intensive course covering everything an actor needs to know to dive into a career of animation and interactive game voice acting. The emergence of Covid-19 has changed the world as we know it but the voice over industry is still going strong . This class will teach you how to survive as a voice artist during this time. We will talk about how to put a professional home studio together according to your needs/budgets and what to expect in a number of different remote record session scenarios. Designed to assist experienced and professional actors in building their vocal repertoire of characters, the goal of the class is for each actor to develop at least 10-12 distinct voices by the end of the workshop. During the course, actors will expand their stable of characters as they acquire the material, tools, and knowledge they will need to create a successful animation demo and voice over career. Prior voice acting experience is not required but prior acting experience is a prerequisite due to the amount of information that is covered and the accelerated pace of the class.
Some of the subjects covered are:
- How to create, sustain, and retain animation character voices.
- How to stand out in an audition. How to recognize and execute all of the important beats in a scene of audition copy. How to make viable character choices based on the character description and the script.
- What to expect on the job in a studio. Recording studio etiquette and mic technique.
- What to expect in a remote live record session.
- How to set up your home studio to record auditions and remote sessions at home.
- Update your understanding of the ever changing business of voice acting and the growing importance of social media and self publicity.
- Learn the unique skills needed for Interactive game voice acting.
- What makes a good animation demo.
- How to write your own scripts and choose characters within your castability in preparation for making your animation demo.
- How to prepare for a general agent/casting director audition.
- A one hour remote private session (to be scheduled with Catherine)

To ensure my student’s safety, this class will be taught as online Zoom Workshop due to Covid-19 restrictions. The voice over business has been ever growing and evolving since the advent of Covid-19. Whereas other parts of the business have come to a grinding halt, the world of voice over is still thriving. Voice actors are recording sessions in their homes while connecting to clients remotely. While each production studio is working out their own different remote recording formats, the voice over talent needs to keep up and is expected to be able to record audio files on professional quality microphones, in professional recording software, on up to date computers, with good internet speed. These recordings will often be used as the actual audio file or occasionally as a temp or backup. Instead of a place to just record auditions, voice over jobs are now requiring home studios to be at a high enough level to compete with professional studios. You can expect that before, during, or after your audition you will be asked what your home studio specs are and whether you have access to Zoom, Skype, Source Connect Live, IPDTL, ISDN, or other high-quality options for audio professionals to record and monitor remotely. No longer is talent alone a factor for casting. Instead of remaining overwhelmed, dive in and gain the knowledge you will need to record yourself at a professional quality level and master basic engineering skills that are imperative to know if you want get hired and work as a voice actor now.
Since Covid-19, I am working as much if not more than before in my home studio doing remote Animation sessions, Interactive Game sessions, ADR sessions, and Dubbing sessions. I will share with you my first hand knowledge of what you might encounter in these types of sessions. In addition, I will share with you how to set up your home record studio and I will share resources where to go to for additional professional help.
Many live remote recording sessions are recording using a Zoom format either alone or in conjunction with other recording programs. Most people are now familiar with Zoom but if not I will guide you through the basics. Each student will get practice learning to remotely record themselves during our Zoom sessions.
In my classes, rather than giving long lectures, I believe in an experiential approach to learning voice acting. In other words, you need to actually do it and experience it in your body, in order to learn it. My top priority is that all of my students get as much coached recorded mic time as possible. For this reason, I implement a flipped classroom style where essential material regarding V.O. Acting and the V.O. Business is emailed ahead of time and read by the student prior to class. Discussion and answering of questions will be included but the main emphasis of the class is one on one coaching while being recorded remotely through the students own equipment – whether that be on a phone, iPad, or on a computer using your devices microphone or using a professional microphone, connected to an interface or connected directly to your computer.
Each day of the workshop will focus on a particular aspect of the animation voice over business. For example, one of the sessions will be dedicated to auditioning and self direction; another will focus on interactive game voice acting covering the unique skills and challenges associated with that genre. The course culminates with a simulated general audition where the actor will perform 10-12 characters back to back in front of the class. Most students will be prepared in the event they get the opportunity to perform a general audition in front of an agent or casting director directly after this experience. After the class is over, some students choose to take the workshop again or continue studying privately with me to prepare for and make their animation demos. Homework will be assigned each week. Students who want to gain the most out of the workshop should plan on taking the class at a time when their schedules allow time for extra work outside of class. During the class, I work individually with each student and carefully select scripts that will show off their strengths and develop their talent. I strive to create a fun, supportive atmosphere in my workshops. It truly brings me joy when my students begin to “get it” and I love hearing about their successes after the class is over.
